Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge occupies more than 24,000 acres of pond-strewn grassland and desert shrubs. Wintering waterfowl, sandhill cranes, roadrunners, quails and pheasants are among the 300 species of birds that use the area. Salt Creek wilderness can be entered only on foot or horseback. An 8 mile self-guiding driving tour on the south unit allows for bird and wildlife observation. The best months to visit are October through February; hunting is available in season. Picnicking is permitted. A tour leaflet and other information can be obtained at the refuge headquarters or by writing. Refuge open daily 1 hour before dawn - 1 hour after dusk, weather permitting. Admission is Free. Locatedten miles northeast off Hwy 285 or eight miles east via Hwy 380.
