Bloomfield is in San Juan County , and in the Northwest New Mexico region. Bloomfield is located just east of Farmington between Farmington and Dulce along US Highway 64 on the banks of the San Juan River near the Navajo Reservoir and the Colorado state line.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,260, an increase of 1,046 since 1990.
