Carson National Forest

1,500,000 Acres of Scenic, Recreational and Wilderness Areas.

The Carson National Forest scenic and recreational focus is in the districts that encompass the Sangre de Cristo and the San Juan Mountains flanking the upper Rio Grande Valley. Five wilderness areas; Wheeler Peak, Latir Peak, Cruces Basin, the northern portion of the Pecos and Chama wildernesses and an 8-mile long section of the Rio Grande Wild River - perserve the region's pristine beauty. Wildlife abound in the 100,000 acre Valle Vidal Unit. Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway is an 84 mile drive loop offering a panorama of the southern Rocky Mountains from Taos east to Eagle Nest, then north to Questa via Hwy 38, and south on Hwy 522 back to Taos. Ghost Ranch Living Museum contains animals and plants native to northern New Mexico. The curved cliffside of Echo Amphitheater, 3 miles north of the museum off Hwy 84, is a prime spot for photography. Summer and winter recreation is available. Trails for mountain bikiing, hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.
