Cimarron is in Colfax County, and in the Northeast New Mexico region. Cimarron can be found northeast of Santa Fe between Taos and Raton along US Highway 64 near the Vermejo River and the Colorado state line. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 890, an increase of 116 since 1990.

Where the Rockies Meet the Plains. In the 1800s, few towns had as extreme of a reputation for gunplay and violence as Cimarron, New Mexico. At one time luridly lawless, today this peaceful town shadows the sights and sounds of its historic past. You can even see ruts of the Santa Fe Trail. Cimarron's museums and historic buildings offer fun and educational activities. Close-to-town recreation can also be found in the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
