Gran Quivira

Limestone House Mounds date 1300-1670

Gran Quivira part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions Natl. Monument was one of the most populous pueblos of Salinas Province, with more than 1,500 inhabitants. The 21 limestone house mounds date 1300-1670, 300 rooms and six kivas can be viewed. Also preserved are the churches and convents of San Isidro, begun in 1629, and San Buenaventura, begun in 1659. A visitor center displays artifacts and shows 10 and 40 minute videotapes on request. A leaflet for a self-guiding trail is available. Picnicking is permitted.
