La Cueva is located in Mora County, and in the Northeast New Mexico region. La Cueva is located near Las Vegas, NM on Highway 518.

In the mid 1970s, the Centennial Museum of the University of Texas at El Paso ran a number of test excavations in front of La Cueva where about 100,000 artifacts were recovered. Being an archeological site, La Cueva rock shelter has seen considerable pothunting activity over the years.
