At the Las Vagas National Wildlife Refuge you will find 8,672 acres of prairie land bordered by the timbered canyons of the Gallinas River and Vegosa Creek. The refuge has more than 300 species of wildlife, including 239 species of birds, and is noted for its diversity of birds of prey. In season, golden and bald eagles, rough-legged and Swainson's hawks, burrowing owls and kestrels abound. Area bird lists, interpretive leaflets outlining a 7 mile driving tour, and permits for walking on a self-guiding nature trail can be obtained at the refuge office until 2 p.m. _weather permitting_. Allow 1 hour minimum for a driving tour, 2 hours minimum for the nature trail. Admission is Free. Located 6 miles southeast via Hwy 104 and 281.
