Lincoln National Forest

Elevations range from 4,440' to 11,580'.

Most of the Sacramento, Guadalupe and Capitan mountains, timbered with pine, juniper and fir, lie within the 3 units of Lincoln National Forest. Covering 1,103,466 acres, the forest ranges from desert to subalpine terrain. The northern units of the White and Capitan mountain wildernesses has pristine back country for horseback riding or hiking trips, while Ruidoso is a popular recreation and resort center. Cloudcroft is another recreation complex. The southern unit embraces the relatively little-traveled, semiarid Guadalupe Mountains. A waterfall, uncommon in this region, is the focus of Sitting Bull Falls Picnic Area, 44 miles west of Carlsbad via Hwy 285, Hwy 130 and Hwy 236. There are also more than 100 caves that canbe entered with a free permit, available by mail. Five Point Vista has a panarama of Dog Canyon and the Brokeoff Mountains. Commonly called Sunspot Highway, Hwy 6563 has spectacular views of the Tularosa Basin and the dunes of White Sands National Monument.
